Why Sleep Medicine for Dentists?
Statistics show that over 25% of current dental patient population suffer from undiagnosed Sleep Related Breathing Disorders. These SRBDs such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea have been shown to have direct consequences on heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, depression, chronic pain syndromes and many more adverse health issues.
Dentists have the unique opportunity to be the first gateway to screen these patients for upper air way obstructions and for SRBDs. In fact, this is now considered an essential screening process by American Dental Association and various dental organizations all over the world.
Once dentists realize the important role they play in Sleep Medicine, in Sleep Related Breathing Disorders and in development of airway space, there would be no going back. Dentists are physicians of the mouth and this is going beyond the 32 teeth and moving on to improving health and saving lives. This course will teach different management perspectives on conditions that dentists deal with on a daily basis in their practices like bruxism, generalized attrition, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, chronic orofacial pain, immune response, periodontal disease, etc. We will learn how sleep disorders influence and are frequently comorbid conditions for above.
In children physiology of sleep and clinical presentations of sleep disorders is different from that of adults, so is the treatment protocols. So Pediatric Sleep Medicine will be a separate course, along with craniofacial and airway space development.

Dr Nivedita Kumar
Dr Nivedita Kumar is currently based in Bangalore, India and has international clinical and private practice experience, having trained at University of Michigan and Louisiana State University in USA and having practiced in Michigan for 15 plus years Her primary specialization and initial clinical practice was in Periodontics and Implant dentistry but eventually her special interest in sleep medicine prompted her to explore this relatively new field in dentistry.
Dr Nivedita brings a lot of practical knowledge with up-to-date scientific information, to her courses. The past years, she has dedicated a majority of her clinical practice time to sleep medicine having set up a Sleep Center which practices a wholistic collaborative approach to management of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders and other sleep disorders. She has also set up a Sleep lab for sleep studies and has started NK's Sleepwell Technologies, a go to center for solutions for dentists practicing Dental Sleep Medicine. This is the first of its kind in India.
Dr Nivedita (also known as Dr Nivi ) is eager to share this knowledge and help other dentists implement sleep apnea treatment within their practices and help save lives.

Dr Alok Lathi BDS, MDS
(Oral Med and Maxillofacial Radiology)
Dr Alok Lathi has extensive experience in digital imaging and analysis of CBCT. He is the co founder of digital dental implantology which manufactures surgical guides for implants and he also co-owns a chain of CBCT diagnostic imaging centers in India. Dr Alok is an Associate professor at MA Rangoonwala College of Dental Sciences Pune and he is a national and international speaker and trainer for CBCT and has conducted many workshops in India and Southeast Asia in CBCT imaging and analysis.
Anupam Kanodia MBBS, MS (ENT)
Dr Anupam Kanodia is an accomplished ENT surgeon who completed his MBBS training in AIIMS, New Delhi and completed his Ms in Otolaryngology in the same institution. He furthered his education by completing MRCs in UK and CTP training in Snoring and Sleep Disorders at AIG Hyderabad.

Air Cdr Dr Balakrishnan Jayan, BDS,MDS Orthodontics and

Dr Balakrishnan Jayan, Professor, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedicsis the first dental professional in India to be awarded Hon. Fellowship in Sleep Medicine by the Indian Sleep disorders society. He has been very involved in clinical care and many research projects of treatment of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders, Craniofacial development, Upper airway management. Dr Jayan has numerous presentations in various national and international conferences. He has contributed to chapters in various popular International Orthodontic and sleep medicine books. Currently he holds the appointment of Commandant “Air Force Institute of Dental Sciences” and Dental Advisor (IAF).
Dr Harihara Murthy MBBS, MS, DLO
Dr Murthy is a consultant ENT and head and Neck surgeon with over 33 years of experience. He is a specialist in Head and Neck surgical procedures including Nasal plastic surgery, Microscopic, Endoscopic & Laser Surgery, Voice Surgery, ENT Head and Neck Cancer Surgery, Cleft Lip & Palate Surgery etc.
His special interest is in sleep disorders, management of Sleep Apnea cases, surgical therapies for Sleep Related Breathing Disorders and mentoring many young surgeons. He has developed soft palate plication surgery to reduce/eliminate snoring. Dr Murthy is an eminent speaker and an exponent of collaborative care and interdisciplinary management of sleep apnea cases. He has instituted the first multi-disciplinary Sleep medicine department, for the first time in India, at Trustwell Hospitals, Bangalore
Dr Jeevanan Jahendran MBBS, MS ORL- HNS

Dr Jeevanan Jahendran is a Senior Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist in Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His current focus is in Rhinology, Airway and Sleep Disordered Breathing. He has been president of Malaysian society of otolaryngologists and has served distinguished posts in various Sleep and surgical societies.
Dr Jeevanan is an international speaker and is currently dedicated in bringing a whole new concept of managing upper airway in an integrated manner through bridging multiple specialties. Integrative Airway Summit, an international conference, recently organized by him , which featured many eminent speakers stressed the importance of collaborative care in the management of dysfunctional breathing and sleep disordered breathing.
Dr Lokesh Kumar Saini MBBS, MD ( Respiratory Medicine )
Dr Lokesh is an very experienced Interventional Pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist, who has been at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Jodhpur from 2014 to 2017 and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Division of Sleep Medicine, at AIIMS Rishikesh. Dr Mythili Kalladka BDS, MSD (Orofacial Pain )
Dr. Mythili Kalladka is a Diplomate of American Board of Orofacial pain and is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor, Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Disorders, Eastman Institute for Oral Health, Rochester, USA. She also has a private practice dedicated to Orofacial pain management.
Dr Mythili’s research interests include neuropathic pain, orofacial pain, sleep , temporomandibular disorders and cancer pain and she is on the editorial board of several journals and has several publications in Pubmed indexed journals. She frequently lectures in National and International conferences.
Dr Prashant Makhija MBBS, MD ( Internal Med ) , DM ( Neurology ), Post Doc Fellow ( Epilespy and Sleep Medicine )
Dr Prashant is a Neurologist practicing at Wockhardt hospitals in Mumbai and has an experience of over 19 years . He completed MBBS from JIWAJI university Gwalior in 2004 , MD in internal medicine from Awadesh Pratap Singh University in 2008 , Doctorate of Medicine ,in Neurology from University of Delhi in 2014 and has also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Epilepsy and Sleep Medicine . Dr Prashant has published extensively in prominent journals and is a well known speaker in Sleep Organizations and Conferences throughout India

Dr Prisly Thomas completed his MDS in Prosthodontics, Implantology and Crown and Bridge from Kerala University of Health Sciences. He subsequently completed his Fellowship and Mastership in TMD, Orofacial Pain and DSM from Roseman University , USA. She is currently in Private practice and a well sought speaker in various dental societies
Dr N. Ramakrishnan is the Director of Nithra Institute of Sleep Sciences and Director of Critical Care Services, Apollo Hospitals
Dr N. Ramakrishnan is the Director of Nithra Institute of Sleep Sciences and Director of Critical Care Services, Apollo Hospitals. He is a quadruple American Board Certified Specialist in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Sleep Medicine and Obesity Medicine. His vast training and expertise includes specialisation programs in American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Critical Care Medicine, American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and Indian college of Critical Care Medicine He has also been the Past President of Indian Sleep Disorders Association and has been passionate about creating awareness and teaching Sleep Medicine within India and Internationally.
Prof. Dr. Ramkumar Subramaniam MDS, DNB, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon , Diplomate of American Board of Orofacial Pain, Associate Fellow in American Academy of Implant Dentistry.
Dr Ram is an experienced and accomplished Maxillo-Facial surgeon who has worked extensively on surgical therapies for Sleep Apnea cases, including Orthognathic Surgery and Distraction Osteogenesis procedures. Dr Ram is well published in numerous well known journals. He is an invited speaker for many conferences and is also actively involved in training and guiding postgraduate residents in clinics and in surgery. His recent passion in Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine led him to pursue further training and he has also cleared the American Board of OroFacial Pain.
Prof. Dr. V. Rangarajan
Dr. V. Rangarajan Graduated in dentistry from the Faculty of Dentistry, Annamalai University, Chidambaram in 1988 receiving the ‘Best-outgoing student – Gold Medal’ & completed his Masters Degree in the speciality of Prosthodontics from R.Ahmed Dental College, Kolkata in 1993.
He received the “ Diplomate in Oral Implantology“ from ICOI, New York, in 2003. Completed the Fellowship & Mastership in TMD, Oro-facial pain & Dental sleep medicine (Roseman University, USA) and is now a ‘Diplomate of American Board of Orofacial Pain’ in 2023.
He is currently: Prof & HOD Prosthodontics, Sri Venkateswara Dental College, Chennai, India
He has co-authored the popular ‘Textbook of Prosthodontics’. Dr Rangarajan Has been in private practice since 1993 & runs a multispecialty dental center in Chennai called ‘the iDentity’

Lieutenant General Nanda Kishore Sahoo, PVSM, VSM, PHDS an eminent Maxillofacial surgeon who during his distinguished military career of 38 years, has held multiple important appointments including Director General of Dental Services and Colonel Commandant of Army Dental Corps.
Lt. Gen. Sahoo has over 140 publications to boast with numerous and highly cited national and international papers. He also serves in the editorial and review boards of various reputed scientific publications.

Ms Sangeeth is a qualified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist for insomnia and is actively involved in supportive therapy of sleep disorders for patients at NK’s Snoring and Sleep Apnea Center. As qualified and experienced Nutritionist and Lifestyle & Mindset coach, and having worked in many healthcare facilities , Ms. Sangeetha has had over 20 years of experience as a health consultant. She has conducted many courses and seminars at various corporate events, schools and colleges. She is also a co-author of books “diet and diabetes “and “Madhumeh mei aahar.
Dr Shalu Chandna Bathla
Dr Shalu Chandna Bathla, Director, Zenith Academy, Karnal – A centre for Perio, Implant Lasers. Former professor in the department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology at MMCDSR, Mullana. Graduated from DAV Dental College, Yamunanagar in 2002. She completed her Postgraduate Education from PGIMS Rohtak in 2006. She has authored three books of Periodontology and contributed Chapters in other three international textbooks.She has pursued Implant fellowship from New York University. She is a trained Lasers Practitioner by none other than Laser stalwart Dr Donald J. Coluzzi and Dr Kripa Jowar. She is the executive member of IDA branch, Karnal; life member of – Indian Society of Periodontology; Indian Society of Oral Implantologists (ISOI), Indian Academy of Laser Dentistry and Punjabi Dental Society Canada. In recognition of significant contribution for the advancement of Medical Sciences she has received membership of National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) in year 2016.

Dr. Shreya Singh is an experienced orthodontist running an independent practice and working as a consultant in multiple clinics across Bangalore. She has worked as a Senior lecturer in SVDC, Bangalore. Dr Shwetha Kanchan is an International Sleep Medicine Specialist, certified by the prestigious World Sleep Federation program, USA and is an American Board Registered Polysomnographic Technologist by BRPT and is also certified in Pediatric Sleep Medicine by AASM. Dr Shwetha has co-authored a book RPSGT PEARLS and has published several research articles in renowned journals. She is passionate about teaching about sleep medicine and sleep technology and regularly conducts training programs and workshops on the same.

Dr Srinivas Kishore is the director and Head of the department of Otolaryngology at AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad. He completed MBBS from Manipal Academy Of Higher Education, Manipal, India in 1995 and MS – ENT from Manipal Academy Of Higher Education, Manipal, India in 1999. Dr. Tripat Deep Singh MBBS, MD (Physiology), RPSGT, RST, CCSH
Dr Tripat is an International Sleep Specialist (World Sleep Federation Program) and is the founder director of Academy of Sleep Wake Science. He has authored 3 books “Basic Polysomnography- An algorithmic approach to Sleep Scoring”, “Sleep Technology Review” and “RPSGT and CPSGT Mock Exams” and also has many journal publications to his credit.
Dr. Vijaya Krishnan P, MBBS, MS Otolaryngology
Dr Vijaya Krishnan is the Head of the Dept of Snoring & Sleep Disorders, Madras ENT Research Foundation, Chennai. He is the current President of Indian Association of Surgeons for Sleep Apnea (IASSA) and Secretary of Indian Academy of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee member of the World Sleep Society.
